Keep away from people who have chicken pox or shingles whilst taking steroids if you have never had these illnesses. You should contact your advice line urgently if you think you have an infection. Let’s first consider some caveats – our study recruited patients with less severe sore throat on average since we couldn’t ask GPs not to treat those patients who were bad enough to need immediate antibiotics. People with a history of allergies, such as asthma, eczema or hay fever, are at higher risk of developing a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to penicillins, although cases are rare.
